TUSCIA: THE VIA FRANCIGENA IN LAZIO FROM PROCENO TO VITERBO

Quarto Spazio proposes 4 stages of the Via Francigena in 5 days

In the Middle Ages, the Via Francigena was a pilgrims' road that linked Canterbury to Rome. Since 1994 the Via Francigena has been recognized by the European Council as an official cultural itinerary.

The first route of the historic itinerary was traced by the archbishop of Canterbury Sigerico, who in 990 went to Rome in visit to Pope John XV. Upon his return trip he jotted down all the stops in a document that today preserved in the British Library. Today this pathway of almost one-thousand kilometres, has been embellished and rebuilt through other accounts from the past, leading to its rediscovery of its origins. The path crosses seven Italian regions commencing from Gran San Bernardo in the Aosta Valley, passing through Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio.

Those who set out on the journey can request the "Pilgrim Credential" which certifies their status of a "Pilgrim" and at the conclusion the "Testimonium" which certifies the completion of their pilgrimage.
