Palaces and gardens in Tuscia

A unique trip to discover the historic gardens and palaces of this beautiful land.

Day 1. Departure from the train station of Rome Termini or Rome Fiumicino Airport, by private coach to visit Bolsena. Arrival in the late morning, and meeting with the Tour Guide. Visit to Salvie Garden. It is a delicious botanical garden looked after by its owners, overlooking the lake Bolsena.  The vast range of sagebrush and wild plants, embellish the area. Drive to Lubriano to see Monaldeschi della Cervara Palace. It is named after the aristocratic family of Orvieto, which turned the convent into a small countryside castle, (XI century). Paolo Antonio Monaldeschi designed the palace in baroque style. In the evening, transfer to Bolsena. Visit to Principe del Drago Palace. Inside there is an important cycle of frescoes from the mannerism age, before the school of Zuccari. Time to enjoy an aperitif on the terraced garden overlooking the lake Bolsena. Afterwards return to the hotel. Dinner in hotel.

Day 2. Breakfast in hotel. Guided tour of Moutan Botanic Centre. It is named after a type of tree peony from China, and was built in 1993. The centre is located in the north part of Lazio, covering an area of 15 hectares, and houses the world’s largest collection of trees and herbaceous peony. It includes around 600 different varieties and natural hybrids belonging to well-known botanical species. In the afternoon, transfer to La Vigna, owned by D’Amico family, and located in the Calanchi Valley.  The garden features countless shrubs and roses scattered in the garden, bushes, and even in the vineyard: based on ancient countryside tradition, a plant is at the top of each line. After the visit, tasting of the wine produced by the D’Amico Family, in cellars designed  by the architect  Luca Brasini, underneath the gardens,  with an ideal temperature of 16°. Afterwards return to the hotel. Dinner in hotel.

Day 3. Breakfast in Hotel. Departure for Bagnoregio in the heart of Calanchi Valley, to visit, along with the owner, Hortus Unicorni in Vetriolo. It is a botanical private garden rich in Magnolias, Liliums, Peonies, Irises, hedges of box, Ceanothus, and plants from different countries. Time for lunch. Afterwards, transfer to Civitella d’Agliano to visit the garden of Paul Wiedmer, “La Serpara”. It is part of a roman park, and features some examples of baroque art. The artist accompanies visitors in this itinerary full of artworks. Every year, contemporary artists, friends of the owner, come here to embellish the garden with their works.  Return to the hotel. Dinner in hotel.

Day 4. Breakfast in hotel. Departure for Vasanello, to visit Orsini Misciattelli Castle. Lunch in the castle. After lunch, departure for Vignanello to visit Ruspoli Castle.  For centuries, the Vico, Aldobrandini, Orsini and Naldini families, fought over the territory and its castle. The members of the family ruled Vignanello for centuries until 1816, when they left the fief, although keeping many proprieties up to now.

Tuscia and the gardens of Calanchi

Day 1. In the afternoon arrival in Viterbo, and check in to a 4-star hotel. Free time for independent lunch. Guided tour of the city by a tour guide, through the medieval quarters of the old town centre rich in history and legends.  The days end with a visit to the medieval quarter San Pellegrino, full of beautiful balconies with flowers, craft shops and antique stores.  Return to the hotel. Dinner in hotel.

It is a botanical private garden rich in Magnolias, Liliums, Peonies, Irises, hedges of box, Ceanothus, and plants from different countries.  Next is Clarisse Garden in Bagnoregio, a jewel known by few. A collection of flowers and herbs like in the traditions of monastic vegetable gardens.  Lunch in the Hosteria del Ponte in Bagnoregio. It is located on a cliff falling sheer into the valley. Departure and end of the tour.

Renaissance in Tuscia

Day 1. Arrival in Viterbo and check in to Hotel or B&B. Transfer to Vignanello to visit Ruspoli Castle, a pearl of Viterbo’s territory built during the Renaissance period. Halls decorated with frescos and Italian gardens enrich the beauty of the castle. Lunch break will be spent near Viterbo. After lunch, transfer to Bagnaia, to visit Villa Lante. In the villa, the magnificent giardino all’italiana prevails over everything else, allowing other elements, such as the two Casini, to match perfectly the green. In the evening, return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 2. Breakfast in hotel. Departure for Ronciglione, to visit Villa Lina. Over the centuries many artists and scholars have lodged here, including roman poet Trilussa and modern writer D’Annunzio. The garden was given a botanic structure typical of the late XVII century, with many species of trees (33). In the noon, transfer to Caprarola for lunch (not included in the tour). After lunch break, visit to Farnese Palace, (it dates back to 1559-1575), and to its park. Vignola, who wanted to show in it the power of the Farnese family, designed the palace. Inside, it is possible to admire the halls decorated by the Zuccaris and other well-known artists of the European and Roman mannerism. In the evening, return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 3. Breakfast in hotel and departure for Bolsena. Guided walk in the characteristic hamlet, and visit to Principe del Drago Palace, an elegant building of the renaissance located below the Castle. The Palace features Tuscany architecture and a cycle of roman mannerism frescos, prior to that of Zuccari. The roof garden is also must-see, with numerous potted lemons, and a unique view over Lake Bolsena.  At the end of the visit, cocktails on the house. End of the tour.

Hot springs and botanic garden

Day1. Arrival in Viterbo and check in to hotel. It belongs to the Terme dei Papi. Transfer to farmhouse for lunch. Afterwards, visit to the suggestive old town centre that through history has remained intact. The days end with a visit to the medieval quarter San Pellegrino, full of beautiful balconies with flowers, craft shops and antique stores.  Return to the hotel, dinner and sleepover.

Day 2. Breakfast in hotel.  Transfer to Vitorchiano. Time for lunch. Guided tour of Moutan Botanic Centre. It is named after a type of tree peony from China, and was built in 1993. The centre is located in the north part of Lazio, covering an area of 15 hectares, and houses the world’s largest collection of trees and herbaceous peony. It includes around 600 different varieties and natural hybrids belonging to well-known botanical species. In the afternoon, return to Viterbo and time available for enjoying a wellness programme at the Vita Spa, thermal centre of the hotel Salus Terme. Dinner and sleepover in hotel.

Day 3. Breakfast in hotel. Visit to Tuscia University’s Botanic Garden. The Botanic garden Angelo Rambelli is a structure that in use for the university teaching, research, conservation of ex situ/in situ, and plays an important role in spreading scientific knowledge. The area is divided up into lots housing plants arranged based on taxonomy, phytogeography criteria, and environmental reconstruction, compatible with the climate and Pedological characteristics of the area. Time for lunch. In the afternoon, time for enjoying the spa’s treatments. Viterbo’s thermal water has volcanic origins; it is rich in sulphur nitrogen, ideal for the skin treatments. The thermal centres provide tubs with both cold and hot water. End of the tour.

Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena

Day 1. Breakfast in hotel. Departure for Bagnoregio in the heart of Calanchi Valley, to visit, along with the owner, Hortus Unicorni in Vetriolo. It is a botanical private garden rich in Magnolias, Liliums, Peonies, Irises, hedges of box, Ceanothus, and plants from different countries.  Next is Clarisse Garden in Bagnoregio, a jewel known by few. A collection of flowers and herbs like in the traditions of monastic vegetable gardens.  Transfer to Civitella d'Agliano to visit the fabulous La Serpara garden enriched with sculptures and the parks created in an artistic way with a rich tradition that in Europe dates back to the Roman Empire.Return to the hotel, dinner and sleepover.

Day 2. Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to La Vigna, owned by D’Amico family, and located in the Calanchi Valley.  The garden features countless shrubs and roses scattered in the garden, bushes, and even in the vineyard: based on ancient countryside tradition, a plant is at the top of each line. After the visit, tasting of the wine produced by the D’Amico Family, in cellars designed  by the architect  Luca Brasini, underneath the gardens,  with an ideal temperature of 16°. Brunch. Afterwards, visit of La Canonica, a garden crop with surprising views of the gullies that offers Mediterranean charm, thanks to the use of evergreen shrubs and fragrant bushes, in harmony and continuity with the surrounding environment. Return to the hotel. Dinner in hotel.

Day 3 Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to Marta and visit of the private garden of about one hectare of La Cannara. Next to the river and around a small lake, trees and shrubs, bamboo and lawns and flowers. Roses and peonies, iris and violets, poppies and calla lilies up to the large lotus flower. Following transfer to Bolsena. Tasting of extra virgin olive oil and honey. Visit of the La Luccica garden. The Viterbo countryside, rich in ancient Etruscan and Roman history around the beauty of Lake Bolsena, a large volcanic basin with crystal clear water that has been nicknamed the drinking lake. Before the entrance, the garden extends beyond the height of the hedges with the golden yellow bloom of the Berberis julianae. Lunch at a farmhouse. Departure and end of services.
